If a zombie apocalypse ever occurred, there’s one building where you could comfortably hunker down.
This ‘dystopian’ apartment complex, known as Regent International, is situated in Qianjiang Century City within Hangzhou’s central business district in China.
Within this complex, residents have access to gyms, supermarkets, nail salons, swimming pools, and even multiple hairdressers. Those who reside here could effectively never have to step outside, especially since some apartments come with spacious balconies.
Standing at 675 feet and offering 260,000 square meters of space, this Chinese apartment complex is among the largest structures in Hangzhou’s central business area.
For those wondering about the cost of residing here, smaller apartments without windows typically rent for about 1,500 RMB per month ($210), as reported by local media. Larger units with balconies are available at 4,000 RMB per month ($570).
So, how many people actually reside here?
A 2023 Hangzhou Network Media article states: “During the peak period of the population moving into the shared housing, Regent International had more than 30,000 residents.” However, a 2021 report cited in the same article indicated that only 10,000 permanent residents were officially recorded at that time.
Regent International has gained viral attention on social media, particularly through TikTok videos showcasing the extensive amenities available to its residents.
Real estate agent images now provide a glimpse of what inhabitants can enjoy inside the building.
The interiors are quite striking, featuring various flat layouts and marble hallways that impart a luxurious and grandiose atmosphere.
Some might see this as a convenient utopia, while others might view it as a dystopian scenario.
Why include so many amenities instead of more residential space?
The Broad Group, the construction company behind the complex, explained that this approach aims to reduce traffic congestion. The company estimates that the building prevents at least 2,000 cars from hitting the streets by minimizing residents’ need for long commutes to access amenities.
The complex is targeted at students nearing graduation, young professionals, influencers, and small business owners.
