Recently unveiled bodycam footage reveals Idaho victims’ roommate recounting horrifying events around murders

Recently released bodycam footage features Dylan Mortensen, a University of Idaho student who resided with the four friends who were tragically killed by Bryan Kohberger, recounting her experiences on the night of the murders.

Mortensen, in her early 20s, was among the two roommates who survived the horrific events of November 13, 2022, when Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin lost their lives in their off-campus residence.

Kohberger, a former criminology student from Washington, was convicted and sentenced for these murders, though he never revealed a motive for his actions.

Even three years after the incident, new information continues to surface. On August 21, Law&Crime Network released nearly an hour-long video composed of bodycam footage from officers who responded to the crime scene.

While the distressing nature of the footage led to its exclusion from this article, it shows Mortensen speaking to officers, visibly emotional and distressed as she recounted the night Kohberger invaded their home.

Mortensen recalled hearing Goncalves scream that ‘someone’s in the room’ after ascending the stairs, which caused her to retreat.

“That’s what I’m pretty sure she said,” Mortensen later clarified, “she said ‘someone’s here’.”

Mortensen mentioned that despite calling Goncalves’ name repeatedly, there was no response.

“And then I saw the guy,” she recounted. “And I just locked the door, and then I ran downstairs.”

The student also described hearing noises from the bathroom and a woman crying, along with a man’s voice reassuring, “you’re going to be okay, I’m going to help you.”

“I kept calling her name but she wasn’t answering. And then I opened the door for a second and I saw this guy and he was, not insanely tall but he was wearing all black and like this mask that just covered his forehead and his mouth,” Mortensen described.

She stated that she encountered the man around 4am, prompting her to run to her roommate Bethany Funke’s room, where they locked the door.

“We just tried to go to bed, and then we woke up and it was weird because none of our roommates were up, and we called all of them they were not waking up,” she added.

Mortensen later informed officers that the man she saw said nothing to her, but she believed he left through the sliding glass door of the house.

Investigators later confirmed that this was the entry point Kohberger used to access the home.
