A rescue diver has died while taking part in efforts to recover the bodies of four Italian divers who were killed in a cave-diving accident in the Maldives earlier this week.
Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahdhee, who served in the Maldivian military, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after diving during the search operation in Vaavu Atoll.
A government spokesperson told the BBC today that he later died from his injuries.
The update follows the deaths of five Italian nationals who were attempting to explore an underwater cave network roughly 50 metres below the surface in Vaavu Atoll, about 100km south of the Maldivian capital, Malé.
The tragedy is being described as the most fatal diving incident in the country’s history.
