Recent scientific studies have uncovered unexpected effects of using weight loss medications while engaging in smoking or vaping.
Medications like Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Ozempic have gained popularity recently, even though Ozempic is not officially sanctioned for weight loss.
Both Mounjaro and Wegovy have received official approval for aiding weight reduction, raising questions about other potential impacts these medications might have.
With the growing interest in these drugs, research has specifically examined the influence of Mounjaro on smoking and vaping behaviors.
The research conducted by PhoClinic stated: “While Mounjaro is not a stop-smoking treatment, some people notice changes in their cravings or behaviours related to nicotine once they begin taking the medication.”

Experts have identified that while Mounjaro is not intended to help quit smoking, some users have observed changes in their nicotine cravings.
According to the study, individuals who take Mounjaro reported being ‘less interested in smoking or vaping,’ experiencing ‘nausea if they use nicotine,’ finding ‘the taste or smell of cigarettes or vapes unpleasant,’ and reducing their smoking or vaping frequency.
Conversely, some individuals noted no changes in their smoking or vaping habits.
Research published in JAMA Psychiatry two years ago indicated that users of GLP-1 medications, such as Mounjaro and Ozempic, were less likely to seek treatment for substance use disorders, including smoking and vaping, compared to those not using these medications.

Although not definitive, this finding could suggest a link between GLP-1 drug use and diminished nicotine cravings.
The study emphasized the need for additional research to obtain more definitive results.
PhloClinic explored several reasons why medications like Mounjaro might decrease nicotine cravings.
According to the website: “Mounjaro acts on areas of the brain that manage appetite and pleasure. These are the same areas that respond to nicotine. By lowering the brain’s reward response to triggers like food or nicotine, Mounjaro may help reduce the urge to smoke or vape.”
The health site also mentioned: “Nicotine is often linked to habits like smoking after meals or vaping when stressed. Because Mounjaro changes how your body and brain respond to food, it may also affect these routines, making it easier to break old habits.”
UNILAD has reached out to Eli Lilly and Company, the manufacturer of Mounjaro for comment.
