Homer Gere, the oldest of Richard Gere’s three sons, may now be building an acting career, but that was not always the plan.
Children of major film stars often end up entering the same industry, and Hollywood is full of familiar examples. Still, for the 26-year-old actor, performing was not his obvious first choice.
Homer currently appears in FX’s new drama The Shards and also took on the role of Dylan Reid in the third and final season of Euphoria.
Before moving toward acting, he said his interests were much more academic. Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of The Shards premiering on August 5, Gere explained that science once seemed like his future.
“I loved physics. I was a biology guy. Going into college, I thought I was going to be a scientist,” he revealed.
That path changed when he found himself connecting more with creative people than with classmates in the sciences.
“There’s no shade to the physics people, but it just was more my tribe,” he added.
Acting was not the only alternative direction he once imagined for himself either. Gere said there was also a time when he thought baseball might be his future, though a shoulder injury brought that possibility to an end.
Homer attended Brown University, where he graduated in May 2024 with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a minor in visual art. He later pursued acting more seriously after college, making appearances in short films before landing roles in major productions.
He also opened up about the support and guidance he has received from his father over the years. According to Gere, the advice has been less about line readings or scene work and more about professionalism and longevity.
“It’s not like, ‘What should I do in this scene?’ It’s more like, how to carry yourself on set, how to make an acting career work in a way that’s sustainable,” he shared.
He described Richard Gere as an important source of wisdom in his life and career.
“I mean, truly better than I could possibly hope for, from anyone.”
In The Shards, Gere appears alongside Kaia Gerber. Her mother, Cindy Crawford, was previously married to Richard Gere. The pair eloped in December 1991 in Las Vegas and filed for divorce in 1995, ending their four-year marriage. Their now-adult children appearing together in the same production has been noted as a full circle moment for the former couple.
Crawford is now married to Rande Gerber, while Richard Gere is married to Alejandra Silva, his third wife. He shares two sons with Silva, Alexander, seven, and James, six. Homer’s mother is Carey Lowell.

Kia Gerber plays Susan Reynolds in Ryan Murphy’s latest series, while Gere takes on the role of Robert Mallory. In the show, Robert is the mysterious new student whose arrival at the exclusive prep school coincides with murders perpetrated by a serial killer known as “The Trawler.”
The show is adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name. Ellis initially developed the adaptation for HBO in 2024 before the project stalled. Ryan Murphy and FX revived the series in May 2025, with a series order following in July 2025.
“Set against the vivid backdrop of 1980s Los Angeles, the series follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite prep school as they navigate identity, sex, jealousy, obsession and the dangers lurking beneath the surface of American adolescence,” the official logline reads, per PEOPLE. The 10-episode series will premiere with a two-episode launch on August 5, 2026, with subsequent episodes releasing weekly on FX and streaming simultaneously on Hulu.
