Rosie O’Donnell Reunites With Daughter in Prison After Years of Family Turmoil

Rosie O’Donnell has posted an emotional update after making a trip to see her daughter in prison.

In a June 13 Instagram post, O’Donnell said she had visited her daughter Chelsea in prison and described the meeting as emotional, reflective, and cut short when officials evacuated the visitation area because of severe weather. The comedian’s caption read like a poem, centering on forgiveness, love, and the pain of separation.

Chelsea O’Donnell, 28, was arrested three times in 2024 and faced several felony accusations, including methamphetamine possession and child neglect, before ultimately losing her probation.

Rosie later traveled to visit Chelsea at her daughter’s request and shared a photo from the meeting on Instagram, along with a heartfelt reflection on how the day unfolded.

The image, posted on June 12, shows Chelsea hugging her mother as both smile toward the camera.

Back in March, Chelsea received a six-year probation sentence after pleading guilty to resisting or obstructing an officer, possession of methamphetamine, and felony bail jumping.

She had been warned that any breach of her bail terms would lead to that probation being revoked. Those conditions included not having alcohol or controlled substances without a prescription, not possessing a firearm, and avoiding contact with anyone known to be using or selling drugs.

That probation was later revoked, and court records obtained by PEOPLE stated that she was sentenced to prison on October 22.

“I have compassion for those struggling with addiction – Chelsea was born into addiction and it has been a painful journey for her and her four young children. We continue to love and support her through these horrible times. Prayers welcomed.”

Alongside the photo, Rosie also posted a poem describing what it was like to see her daughter again.

“She looks good. Healthy calm / Rested blue eyes / Clear skin / In her green uniform,” Rosie wrote on the post, adding: “We have been thru so much.”

Rosie said Chelsea’s four children ‘have not visited’, something she said ‘which pains her I know’.

She also described trying ‘to stay present’ during the visit.

“I try to shake the sadness.”

Rosie reflected on seeing both the adult her daughter has become and the child she once was.

“It’s hard enough for her / She turns 29 this summer / And all I see when I look at her / Is a blonde baby in diapers.”

She also wrote about the journey afterward and the emotional weight of the day.

“It storms all the way to the hotel / As I try to process / All that’s happened,” adding: “It was a big day for both of us.”

The visit itself was cut short because of ‘weather conditions’.

“Unconditional love / Simply the only way / Thru motherhood / Love and forgiveness a must,” she wrote.
