Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks Are Making a Documentary About John Candy

Ryan Reynolds appears to have a wonderful year: he gets to work with Hugh Jackman in Deadpool 3, an Apple TV+ Christmas movie with Will Ferrell coming out, and he never has to work with T.J. Miller again.

That’s on top of the typical excellent stuff he’s always up to, like purchasing soccer clubs and sneakily turning everything into a stealth advertisement for Aviation Gin.

Ryan Reynolds’ production firm has begun work on a documentary on the late Canadian comic superstar John Candy, ostensibly based solely on his love for him. Reynolds announced his plans on Twitter earlier this week, saying, “With John Candy trending, I’ll just say I love him. So much so, [production company Maximum Effort] is working on a documentary on his life with [Colin Hanks]. Expect tears.”

We don’t know what Hanks’ particular role is yet, but a piece on the subject received confirmation that it is legitimate. Candy’s family is interested with the project and that Maximum Effort will have “access to his archive and personal video footage.”

Candy died of a heart attack while filming Wagons East in 1994. On the 25th anniversary of Candy’s death in 2019, Reynolds posted a tribute video, calling him “a comedic genius and Canadian hero.” He also tagged Candy’s children, Christopher and Jennifer (both of whom also liked Reynolds’ tweet about the documentary), indicating a bond.

To recap, this is another thing that matters a lot to Reynolds that he has wanted to accomplish for a long time, and he now has the opportunity to do so.
