Sandra Bullock has broken her silence on how she and her children navigated her late partner Bryan Randall’s battle with ALS.
The “Practical Magic 2” star, 60, opened up about the experience during a recent appearance on the “SmartLess” podcast, revealing that her two adopted children, Louis, 16, and Laila, 12, responded to Randall’s declining health in starkly different ways. Both kids were “completely aware” of his condition, she said, but each established their own boundaries as the disease progressed.
“About two years before Bryan passed, [Louis] saw it was a dynamic that wasn’t healthy for him to be around,” Bullock shared on the podcast. She described her son as “very evolved” for recognizing his limits, recalling his words to her: “You know what? I’m here for you.”
The Oscar winner emphasized that she resisted letting Louis take on a caretaker role. “I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age,” she explained. “My job [was] to be both at that time.” Louis ultimately “chose to just be there, and support and help [her] on the things that were easy for [her],” though he also “smartly disengaged himself and said, this is a safer space for me to sit.” Bullock supported his decision, telling him, “Absolutely you go.”
Laila’s path diverged from her brother’s. She remained “more bonded until about six months out,” Bullock said, before asking her mother for distance. “And then she says, ‘Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely,'” the actress recounted. She offered her daughter a safety net, adding: “But, if you do wanna go visit, I will come with you, and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there.”
The children couldn’t avoid witnessing Randall’s deterioration. He was bedridden at Bullock’s home, with several nurses also onsite. “They could see,” she said. “They have eyes. And, they are very, very astute kids. Very astute because they not only see the physical change, [but] there’s a behavior that changes in all of us.”
To protect them, Bullock arranged Randall’s quarters in a separate part of the house. “I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it,” she noted. She also enlisted a child psychologist to help Louis and Laila process the situation.
Randall, a photographer, died on Aug. 5, 2023, at age 57, three years after his ALS diagnosis. The illness had not been publicly disclosed during his lifetime.
“He asked me not to share,” Bullock said on the podcast, explaining why she kept the diagnosis private. While she honored his wish, the secrecy came at a personal cost. “It isolated [me] in the process,” she admitted. Her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was the sole confidant initially. Eventually, Bullock turned to longtime friend Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, wife of “SmartLess” co-host Jason Bateman.
The emotional toll began long before Randall’s death. “I think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” she revealed. “There was something that had shifted. My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”
In the viral moment that preceded this interview, Bullock had largely withdrawn from public life following Randall’s death. She had last spoken about him glowingly in December 2021 on “Red Table Talk,” calling him “the love of [her] life” and “the best thing ever.” The couple met in January 2015 when Randall photographed Louis’ birthday party, went public that October at the “Our Brand Is Crisis” premiere, and spent nearly eight years together. Randall helped raise Louis and Laila; he also shared daughter Skylar, now 32, with ex Janine Staten.
Bullock indicated she has begun prioritizing her own wellbeing now. “I take care of myself now,” she shared, adding that after a difficult few years, she’s “so happy.”
