Saoirse Ronan has shared a glimpse into her personal life, something she rarely does.
The actress rose to fame with her role as Keira Knightley’s younger sister in 2007’s Atonement, a performance that earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Ronan has since amassed an impressive filmography, including roles in The Grand Budapest Hotel, Lady Bird, and Little Women.
At 30, the Blitz actor is known for her privacy but has recently opened up in a candid interview.
Previously, Ronan has expressed her discomfort with discussing her personal life, especially her marriage to actor Jack Lowden.
The couple, first linked in 2018, has mostly kept their relationship private.
They were married in a secret ceremony in Scotland in July and made their public debut as a married couple at the Emmys in September, where Lowden was a nominee for his role in the TV series Slow Horses.
In a 2019 interview with ES Magazine, when asked about her romantic life, Ronan stated: “Oh I’m not going to talk about that. I don’t like talking about that side of life.
“Most of the actors I know live pretty normal lives, it’s just every now and again they have to do something ridiculous or extraordinary. My life hasn’t changed. People seem more interested — I guess that’s changed, for sure.”
Despite this, she has now offered fans a rare look into her life beyond her career.
“My life has become so much more than just work,” Ronan shared with USA Today. “For a long time, that’s all I did; that’s how I met people and made sense of the world.
“I feel like I’m part of a group, which I never thought I would have. I used to think, ‘You’ll never have friends. You’ll never have a partner’.
“I was so in my own world, in a lot of ways. So no, to feel like I’ve got a very rich personal and social life — it’s so precious to me.”
Regarding Lowden, she mentioned: “Jack is a lot calmer than I am. He’s my voice of reason.”
Ronan also expressed interest in collaborating with him in the future, saying: “Jack didn’t want to for a long time, but I’ve now convinced him that’s a great idea. I’d really like to do something together on stage.”
Recently, Ronan caught public attention after appearing on The Graham Norton Show.
She was promoting her film Blitz when she interjected during a conversation between Paul Mescal and Eddie Redmayne about self-defense tactics involving a phone.
Mescal joked: “Who is actually going to think about that? If someone actually attacked me, I’m not going to go ‘phone’.
As the two jested, Ronan interjected twice before finally saying: “That’s what girls have to think about all the time”.
Her comment was followed by a moment of silence, then applause after she added ‘Am I right, ladies?’, prompting discussions on women’s safety.
Reflecting on her talk show experience, Ronan told Ryan Tubridy on Virgin Radio UK that the reaction was unexpected.
“The reaction has been wild,” she noted. “And I didn’t necessarily set out to sort of make a splash.
“But I do think there’s something really telling about the society that we’re in right now and about how open women want to be with the men in their lives.”
“So many men and women that I know from all over the world have gotten in touch with me about this one comment, which is, again, I would urge people, please, please, please to watch this in context.”
