A news station in New Mexico decided to put our beloved beards under the microscope: they swabbed and tested men’s beards and discovered that, while several beards contained a lot of normal bacteria, others contained bacteria similar to those found in fecal matter. In their own words, the contaminated beards were “comparable to toilets”.
They are quick to note, however, that poop particles can be encountered everywhere in our daily lives and they won’t necessarily lead to illness.
According to John Golobic — a microbiologist at Quest Diagnostics and the guy who performed the gritty task of swabbing strangers’ beards — there is still a degree of uncleanliness that’s “somewhat disturbing”.
