Viewers have expressed feelings of unease after noticing a disturbing detail in a video depicting the ocean depths.
The ocean holds both allure and intimidation, with numerous videos highlighting these dual qualities.
However, one particular video distinctly emphasizes the ocean’s darker side, and it’s not difficult to understand why.
This footage, uploaded by OceanX on their YouTube channel in 2019, has recently regained attention on social media platforms.
OceanX is a non-profit group dedicated to the conservation of the ocean and its diverse species.
The video presented a remarkable achievement for OceanX, as they managed to tag a marine animal while still inside a submarine—a departure from the usual method of bringing animals to the surface.
The creature in question was the deep-sea bluntnose sixgill shark. Observers found the up-close view both awe-inspiring and frightening.
The video description stated: “Our objective was the deep-sea #shark, the bluntnose sixgill. This ancient species predates most dinosaurs and is a dominant predator of the deep-sea ecosystem.
“The lead scientist on the mission, FSU Marine Lab’s Dr. Dean Grubbs, has been the first to put a satellite tag on one of these elusive sharks, but until now had only been able to do so by bringing them up to the surface.”
Within the clip, scientists marveled at the shark’s impressive size and speed as it fed on the ocean floor. Yet, the atmosphere turned eerie when the shark approached the vessel closely, revealing a distinctly ‘human-like’ eye.
This unnerving sight prompted reactions from social media users.
One individual remarked: “I got chills when the shark opened its eyes, never seen anything like that.”
Another commented: “That human-like eye is unsettling me. That stare down.”
Someone humorously noted: “That side eye is pure “turn off your high beams, bro.”
Another, appreciating the moment, said: “The eye was absolutely incredible. Looks like an animated human eye. Super wicked!”
Another individual added: “If not the size, this shark’s eye alone would have given me a straight heart attack.”
A sixth person observed: “The fact that it actually opened its eye properly to see is crazy. I can only imagine that it relies on its other senses 99% of the time as I guess that they’re sufficient.”
