Sean Astin first became widely known as a child actor more than 40 years ago thanks to his role as Mikey Walsh in The Goonies. Years later, he took on one of his most recognizable parts as Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings — but the experience did not bring the financial security many fans might expect.
The Fellowship of the Ring arrived in 2001 and helped turn Astin into an internationally recognized star. Even so, the attention that followed came with pressures he says he had never anticipated.
“I was not prepared for that level of visibility and access,” he told the Guardian. “And there was a disconnect between the attention that I was getting and how much money we had.”
Astin later explained that the pay he received for the trilogy was far lower than many people assumed, adding that he even had to sell his house.
“I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy,” he revealed, although confirmed he was now ‘very comfortable’ financially.
The comments have long fascinated fans because Peter Jackson’s trilogy was ultimately a massive global hit, with the three films released in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and the franchise eventually becoming one of the highest-grossing film series of all time. But when the movies were cast and filmed, they were still an ambitious gamble rather than a proven box-office machine, and many of the actors were paid comparatively modest upfront salaries by Hollywood blockbuster standards.
Speaking on the Jim & Sam Show in 2017, Astin said the original offer was far from life-changing, especially because he had already committed to a large mortgage before filming began.
“I did the audition process and got offered Lord of the Rings, and it was an offer for $250,000 for a year and a half,” he revealed.
“And I was like, ‘Wait a minute, my pen signed this contract, which obligated me to $250,000 a year, and I’m gonna sign this contract, which will make it so that I absolutely cannot satisfy that other thing.'”
He also broke the numbers down further, saying he ultimately earned around ‘$75,000 a movie with no residuals’.
While some blockbuster series stretch out over many years, Peter Jackson’s trilogy came out in quick succession, with all three films released between 2001 and 2003.
Astin did note later in the same interview that things had improved for him financially by the time the third installment was being promoted, though he chose not to go into detail.
“We agreed not to talk about it, but when it came time to do publicity for the third film, I was feeling a little bit better, is that a good way to get around that?” he questioned.
Astin is not the only member of the cast to discuss the modest pay attached to the trilogy. Orlando Bloom, who was just 22 when he was cast as Legolas, also reflected on his salary during a 2019 appearance on The Howard Stern Show.
“Nothing, nothing, nothing. I got nothing. $175 grand for three movies,” he said.
Despite that, Bloom said he would gladly do it all again, even for less, describing the experience as magical and calling the role the ‘greatest gift of his life’.
Cate Blanchett has made similar comments as well. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, she responded to the suggestion that playing Galadriel may have been one of her best-paid roles.
“Are you kidding me?” she laughed. “No, no one got paid anything to do that movie.”
