Sean Diddy Combs’ legal team is optimistic about the possibility of the music mogul serving a significantly reduced sentence.
More than a year has passed since Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was taken into custody at the Park Hyatt hotel in Manhattan, New York, following a grand jury indictment.
Earlier this year, Combs’ trial on sex trafficking charges commenced, and in July, he was found guilty on two counts related to transportation for the purpose of engaging in prostitution.
Crucially, he was acquitted of the more severe charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.
The rapper and producer has entered a plea of not guilty and plans to appeal the conviction.
The charges he is facing could potentially result in a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. However, Combs’ legal team is hopeful for a much shorter sentence.
In a court filing dated September 22, his attorneys requested that the judge consider a lesser sentence, followed by supervised release which includes mandatory drug treatment, therapy, and group counseling. They argued that this would be “sufficient, but not greater than necessary.”
Prosecutors have until September 29 to propose a sentence. They have indicated that a “substantial” prison term is appropriate, yet they also recognize that federal sentencing guidelines suggest a maximum of just over 5 years.
