Shocking development on winter storm potentially affecting 200 million Americans, with NYC expecting over a foot of snow

Emergency declarations have been issued by governors across multiple states as a major storm is set to impact around 200 million people throughout the US.

The storm, named Winter Storm Fern, is on course to potentially blanket New York City under as much as a foot of snow upon its arrival.

The National Weather Service has cautioned that the storm is likely to cause significant disruption across the country, impacting ‘nearly everyone east of the Rockies’.

Winter Storm Fern, which spans approximately 2,000 miles, is expected to cover around 35 states with snow and ice. The initial areas will likely experience its effects starting Friday (January 23).

The storm is anticipated to begin in the southwest, moving through Oklahoma and Texas, then advancing across the southern states and the Tennessee Valley before proceeding to the mid-Atlantic coast.

Beginning Saturday, New York state is expected to experience the brunt of Winter Storm Fern.

The National Weather Service predicts that the storm will lead to ‘considerable disruption to transportation and daily life’ with at least six inches of snow expected from Sunday into Monday in New York City.

The potential snow accumulation could reach record levels, potentially rivaling the 16.8 inches recorded in Central Park during a two-day period in 2021.

New York state governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the dangers of the extreme cold and potential upheaval, stating on Wednesday: “Extreme cold poses a huge risk — it is crucial that New Yorkers take steps to prepare ahead of time to make sure they can stay safe.

“Dress appropriately if heading outdoors, have supplies on hand and continue to monitor your local forecast. Severe weather doesn’t discriminate – prepare ahead of time.”

Warnings have also been issued by other states in anticipation of the harsh weather conditions.

In North Carolina, Governor Josh Stein declared a state of emergency and advised residents: “Please get ready. Get everything you need in advance of the storm and have a plan in case your power goes out.”

South Carolina has taken similar measures, with Governor Henry McMaster stating: “Preparations are already underway by state agencies, and this State of Emergency ensures Team South Carolina is ready to respond and support communities as conditions develop.”

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has also mobilized emergency resources in preparation for the storm.

Maryland has declared a ‘state of preparedness’, with Governor Wes Moore remarking: “By declaring a State of Preparedness in Maryland, I am directing the Department of Emergency Management to coordinate the comprehensive preparation of State government ahead of potential impacts related to the incoming weather system.”
