An NYPD officer was dragged to the ground by a fleeing BMW during a chaotic early-morning traffic stop in Times Square.
The officer, whose name has not been released, suffered injuries to his left shoulder and knee after grabbing the passenger-side door of a silver 2020 BMW X3 as it sped away, police said. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment following the 3 a.m. Saturday incident at 46th Street and Seventh Avenue.
The driver had been traveling the wrong way down a one-way street, according to the NYPD. When the officer attempted to intervene by grabbing the SUV’s door, the vehicle accelerated and “dragged the cop to the ground,” a police spokesperson said.
Shocking footage posted by Viral News NYC captured the aftermath. The clip shows the officer being thrown at least 10 feet as the BMW races off, with the officer’s gun visible during the encounter. Other officers are seen rushing to assist as the car disappears from view, but the injured cop was already back on his feet by the time help arrived.
The video, which spread rapidly across social media, shows the officer appearing to draw his weapon during the traffic stop before the vehicle flees. It remains unclear whether the officer discharged his firearm or if the driver was armed.
There were no arrests as of Saturday, and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
The brazen escape unfolded in one of Manhattan’s most heavily trafficked intersections, where the NYPD maintains a constant presence due to the area’s dense crowds of tourists and late-night revelers. The incident highlights the dangers officers face during routine traffic stops, even in the city’s most iconic and surveilled locations.
