Sister Wives star Christine Brown reveals surprising detail about first sexual encounter with ex Kody Brown

Christine Brown from Sister Wives has revealed details of her “awkward” first sexual experience with her former husband, Kody Brown, in her new memoir.

Fans of reality TV might recognize Christine, a 53-year-old mother of six, who was spiritually wed to 56-year-old Kody from March 1994 until November 2021. Kody, alongside his current wife Robyn, 46, and ex-wives Meri, 54, and Janelle, 56, are the stars of Sister Wives, a popular reality series that is set to begin its 20th season this fall.

Christine was the third wife to join the polygamous family. After nearly 30 years of marriage, she decided to part ways with Kody, citing the dynamics between him and their children during an interview on the Reality Life with Kate Casey podcast.

Since leaving the marriage, Christine has married David Woolley and bravely opened up about her past with Kody in her memoir, Sister Wife: A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Finding Freedom.

The revealing book was released on September 2, offering insights into Christine’s upbringing in the Mormon faith and providing a candid look at her 28-year relationship with Kody, including how it unraveled.

In her memoir, Christine recounts her and Kody’s first intimate encounter, describing it as a painful memory.

Christine shared that she anticipated her first sexual experience with Kody would be “magic,” believing she would be “safe” with him due to his previous marriage experiences with Meri and Janelle.

“I wasn’t completely clueless, and I trusted him,” she wrote, according to an excerpt shared by PEOPLE.

Unfortunately, the experience, which occurred in a castle-shaped motel near Ogden, Utah, was physically painful for Christine, causing her to cry.

This discomfort stemmed from the encounter being awkward and devoid of any playful interaction before their wedding night.

“‘I’m so sorry,’ he said, as I recall,” she wrote. “But it hurt because there was no foreplay. There was no anything. It was my first time after having my very first kiss at the altar, and he was experienced so he should have known.

“‘I’ve been looking forward to this for so long,’ I said, crying from the pain,” she continued. “I envisioned handholding, moonlight, gentle touches. I imagined feeling beautiful and adored. I imagined a loving acknowledgment of our eternal life together.”

Christine mentioned that she was “too sore” to engage in sex again during their honeymoon.

“I didn’t know anything else, and it was romantic enough for me,” she wrote. “I figured things would get better.”

Despite this hope, Christine noted that Kody “remained distant,” and it took two years of marriage for her to “accidentally” experience her first orgasm.

Reflecting on the moment, Christine thought: “Oh, that’s what everyone’s been so excited about.”

“We even got into a rhythm with sex, and there were a few years where it was kind of good,” she added.

Christine also recounted that Kody had her wear “polygamy PJs” during sex, which covered her from ankles to wrists, or lingerie, but she felt it was not for sexy reasons.

According to Christine, Kody was much “closer” with Meri and Janelle. She was surprised to learn about the intimate relationship they shared.

“I knew how close he could be with Meri and Janelle,” she said. “The walls were thin. It’s one thing to know your roommate is having sex in the next bedroom over. It’s another when it’s your husband and you can hear everything.”

Christine added that the Sister Wives stars were “careful” not to show affection in front of each other, but the situation changed at night.

Sister Wives season 20 premiered on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on TLC. Sister Wife: A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Finding Freedom is available for purchase now.
