Snoop Dogg has faced accusations of homophobia following his recounting of an experience while taking his grandson to watch a film from the Toy Story franchise.
Outside of his music career, Snoop is known for his role as a family man, particularly enjoying his time as a grandfather to his numerous grandchildren.
The rapper, now 53 years old, first became a grandfather in 2015 when his son, Corde Broadus, had his son, Zion. Since then, he has welcomed a number of grandchildren, including Elleven, Cordoba, Kai, Sky, Chateau, Symphony Sol, and the newest addition born to his daughter Cori Broadus in February.
Snoop has embraced his grandfather role, sharing how Zion gave him the affectionate moniker ‘Papa Snoop.’ In a recent episode of the It’s Giving podcast, he shared stories of his interactions with his young relatives.
During this interview, Snoop recounted a visit to the cinema with one of his grandsons to watch “Lightyear” in 2022, a prequel exploring Buzz Lightyear’s origins in the Toy Story universe.
In this film, a main character is portrayed as having two mothers, leading to questions from Snoop’s grandson about the same-sex family dynamic.
Snoop explained, “They’re putting it everywhere […] They’re like, ‘She had a baby — with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!'”
Reflecting on his response, Snoop added, “Oh sh*t, I didn’t come in for this sh*t. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”
The rapper expressed his reluctance to visit the cinema again due to such situations, saying, “Y’all throwing me in the middle of sh*t that I don’t have an answer for.”
“These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions… I don’t have the answer,” he asserted.
After Snoop’s comments surfaced on Reddit, some users criticized the rapper for perceived homophobic sentiments.
One commenter remarked, “It’s only hard to explain if you’re homophobic and trying to hide the existence of gay people to your children.”
Another user labeled the remark as “blatantly homophobic of Snoop.”
Several Reddit users also contested the notion that explaining same-sex relationships to children is challenging, as Snoop suggested.
One user explained, “‘That kid has two moms’ ‘Oh, okay’ This is how I explain it to my small children. Super complicated,” while another added, “My mom’s explanation of gay people was so mundane that I honestly can’t even remember what it was. Gay people existed and that was that.”
A third user commented, “Some women fall in love with other women. Everyone is different. We accept people for who they are.” They questioned the difficulty in answering such questions, offering their perspective as a parent.
Representatives for Snoop have been contacted for comment.
