A man with 13 prior arrests was charged Thursday in the fatal stabbing of a New York City school paraprofessional and the wounding of his friend during a Bronx street attack.
Rashaun Shettlewood, 32, a paraprofessional for the city’s Department of Education, was knifed once in the chest around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson and West Tremont avenues in Morris Heights, according to police. His 33-year-old companion was stabbed repeatedly in the torso during the same incident. Both victims were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where Shettlewood, who resided approximately one mile from the scene, died from his injuries. The older man was listed in stable condition.
The attack originated from a dispute, though law enforcement sources said Thursday that the specific cause of the clash remained unknown. The two victims were friends, but it was unclear whether their assailant knew them personally, sources added.
Police identified the alleged attacker as Jeffrey Jorge, 37, of Brooklyn. Officers apprehended him around 6:30 a.m. Thursday at Ocean Avenue and Parkside Avenue in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, where he was found in possession of a knife. Authorities subsequently linked him to the double stabbing.
Jorge faces charges of murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, and two counts each of assault and criminal possession of a weapon, the NYPD stated.
His criminal record includes 13 previous arrests. The most recent came in May 2022 for a stabbing that occurred in January of that same year, police said. In that incident, a 44-year-old man was knifed at Davidson and West Tremont avenues — the exact intersection where Wednesday’s fatal attack took place. That victim was hospitalized in stable condition.
Jorge’s prior arrests also include a December 8, 2018 bust for allegedly menacing someone with a knife at 174th Street and Grand Avenue. During that incident, authorities said, he bit an officer while resisting arrest.
The disposition of those earlier cases was not immediately known Thursday evening.
Jorge’s arraignment in the murder case was pending Thursday evening.
