Specialist reveals the most inappropriate gifts you should ‘avoid buying for a woman’

Specialists have identified a selection of gifts deemed most offensive, advising against purchasing them for women this Christmas.

The festive season is a time for spreading cheer and demonstrating care for loved ones with thoughtfully chosen gifts, neatly wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree.

However, the task of gift shopping can be quite stressful, especially when selecting something for a woman you aren’t familiar with through an office Secret Santa, a discerning mother-in-law, or a partner who already seems to have everything they desire.

It’s common to feel stuck on what to gift that will truly delight your special someone, and while that may be your challenge to solve, there are certain presents you should definitely avoid.

According to a gift expert from Texas who shared insights on social media, there are three types of gifts to completely avoid as they might offend or convey an unintended message.

Through Leah’s Gift Guide on TikTok, where the expert has garnered over 1.4 million followers, she warned against three items: household cleaning equipment, scales, and anti-aging skincare products.

The video struck a chord with numerous viewers, many recounting their own experiences with ‘offensive’ gifts.

One individual recounted receiving a scale from her in-laws just six weeks after giving birth, which she found ‘deeply offensive’.

Another added: “If you’re unsure about whether they’d appreciate it, just skip it. It’s better to be cautious than to risk a post-Christmas breakup.”

Myka Meier, the founder of Beaumont Etiquette and co-founder of the Plaza Hotel’s Finishing Program, spoke to the Daily Mail about the etiquette of gift-giving.

Based in New York, Myka emphasized that ‘gifts should not make someone feel criticized’.

Items such as weight loss products, clothing in specific sizes, and mood-related items like stress relievers or skincare targeting issues like aging should be avoided.

She noted that lingerie for a colleague is highly inappropriate, as is an unsolicited gym membership for your girlfriend.

For choosing a gift for your partner, Myka recommended avoiding ‘anything impersonal or thoughtless’, as well as task-related items like a vacuum cleaner.

She cautioned against gifting jewelry boxes if your partner is expecting an engagement ring for Christmas and it’s not forthcoming.

Finding presents for moms and mother-in-laws can be tricky too, and Myka advised against gag gifts or overly personal items like underwear, self-help books, cash, clothing in specific sizes, or even perfume unless you are certain of her favorite scent or it was requested, as well as the ‘generic’ gift card.

Regarding dreaded Secret Santa gifts, she suggested opting for ‘neutral, professional gifts that everyone can appreciate’.

In uncertain situations, Myka recommended opting for ‘something heartfelt that shows appreciation and love or something very personal to her’.

Consider yourself cautioned!
