A UK-based GP has discussed the importance of proper maintenance and cleaning of air fryers.
Dr. Karan Rajan shared on TikTok that air fryers are lined with polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
These chemicals are found in a variety of everyday items like food packaging, non-stick cookware, and some textiles.
Per the American Cancer Society, PFAS can pose health risks due to their persistence in the environment and the human body.
“They explain that there are many PFAS, but the ones that have been made and used the most in the United States are PFOA and PFOS,” the society notes.
“Although these chemicals are no longer manufactured in the US, exposure can still occur.”

The American Cancer Society also notes that animal studies link PFOA exposure to certain tumors, including those of the liver, testicles, breast, and pancreas.
“Some research indicates potential connections to other cancers, such as prostate, bladder, breast, and ovarian cancers, but further investigation is needed,” they state.
Dr. Karan mentioned that risks primarily occur if the air fryer is damaged.
“You will be safe as long as you don’t consume the air fryer’s lining,” he explained.
“If concerned about non-stick coatings, consider using a ceramic or stainless steel air fryer.”
To reduce the risk of the coating contaminating food, it’s advisable to avoid scratching the air fryer during cooking and cleaning.
