Medical experts are highlighting a lesser-known shoulder symptom that might indicate cancer.
The American Cancer Society estimates that 2.6 million people in the United States will receive a cancer diagnosis this year, translating to approximately 5,800 new cases each day.
By 2026, it is also expected that more than 623,000 individuals will succumb to the disease.
With the global increase in cancer cases, it is crucial to recognize certain symptoms, including one in the shoulder that may suggest liver cancer.
Although the shoulder might seem unrelated to the liver, the NHS explains that an enlarged liver can exert pressure on the nerves connected to the shoulder, resulting in discomfort and pain.
The Cancer Research UK site explains: “A swollen (enlarged) liver can cause pain in your right shoulder or back.
“This is because the enlarged liver stimulates nerves that connect to nerves in the shoulder. This is called referred pain… A swollen abdomen might cause discomfort or pain, and a loss of appetite or feeling full quickly. It can also cause breathlessness or swollen feet.”

The NHS lists additional symptoms related to liver cancer:
The health service also points out other digestive issues that may arise, including:
While these symptoms do not automatically indicate cancer, it is advisable to consult a doctor if they persist.

The British Liver Trust refers to liver cancer as a ‘silent killer’ and it remains the only ‘major disease’ with increasing mortality rates.
The organization emphasizes that nine out of ten liver cancer cases can be prevented, stating: “Together alcohol, viral hepatitis, and overweight and obesity are the major causes of liver disease. Societal changes are essential to create an environment where healthy options are readily available to everyone and people are supported to make healthy changes to their daily lives.”
