State of Emergency Declared and Flights Canceled Amid Massive New York Snowstorm

If you’re planning to travel to or from New York today or soon, you should stay updated with information from your airline.

Recently, New York and various regions in the US have experienced a significant snowstorm.

A weather alert issued post-Christmas affected 60 million Americans, advising areas like Broome, Cortland, Chenango, Ostego, Delaware, Tioga, Tompkins, and Susquehanna to prepare for sleet and heavy snowfall.

New York City was also among the locations advised to get ready for substantial snow. Some parts of the city and its surroundings have since received between four to ten inches of snow, according to LBC.

The city last experienced significant snowfall in 2022, with eight inches recorded in Central Park.

Given the weather, travelers in and out of New York have been notified about potential travel disruptions. Since Friday, December 26, approximately 9,000 flights have been either canceled or delayed.

Newark Liberty International, John F Kennedy International, and LaGuardia airports have issued snow warnings on social media.

A recent tweet from JFK Airport’s Twitter account stated: “Forecasted weather conditions may cause JFK Airport flight disruptions. Please check with your airline to determine the status of your flight.”

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Boxing Day due to the snowstorms.

According to her website, the emergency was announced for areas including Albany, Bronx, Broome, Cayuga, Chenango, Columbia, Cortland, Delaware, Dutchess, Fulton, Greene, Herkimer, Kings, Madison, Montgomery, Nassau, New York, Oneida, Onondaga, Orange, Oswego, Otsego, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Sullivan, Rensselaer, Suffolk, Ulster, Wayne, Westchester, and adjacent counties.

In a statement on Friday, Hochul remarked: “As widespread snowfall is expected to start in New York City and its surrounding areas this evening, I will declare a State of Emergency to ensure that our agencies and local partners have the resources and tools they need to respond to the storm.”

She further stated: “The safety of New Yorkers is my top priority, and I continue to urge extreme caution throughout the duration of this storm. Please continue to monitor your local forecast, avoid unnecessary travel and if you must travel, take all necessary precautions to ensure you arrive safely at your destination.”
