Stephen King Encourages Fans to Experience ‘Mind-Bending’ Disney+ Mini-Series Described as a ‘Deep, Dark Wild Ride’

Stephen King recently shared his enthusiasm for a ‘mind-bending’ mini-series available on Disney+, describing it as ‘totally engrossing’.

The renowned horror writer was so captivated by the series that he encouraged his fans to watch it, suggesting that the experience is best with minimal prior knowledge.

Known for frequently recommending shows and movies, King previously described a Netflix series as ‘best of the best’.

With a prolific career that includes over 60 stories, many of which have been adapted into popular films, King’s opinion carries significant weight in the entertainment world.

Though King advises viewers to approach this series with little information, here’s a brief overview of what to expect.

This eight-episode mini-series boasts an impressive 82 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Originally premiering on FX via Hulu in 2020, it is now accessible for streaming on Disney+ in the United States, as reported by JustWatch.

The series, a sci-fi techno-thriller, was created, written, and directed by Alex Garland of 28 Years Later fame. It follows Lily Chan (Sonoya Mizuno), a software engineer at the quantum computing firm Amaya, headed by the mysterious CEO Forest (Nick Offerman).

The plot thickens when Lily’s boyfriend, Sergei (Karl Glusman), an AI coder, disappears, prompting her to conduct her own investigation and uncover unsettling truths.

Titled Devs, the series has been praised by critics as a ‘deep, dark wild ride’.

“A hauntingly beautiful meditation on humanity, Devs’ slow unfurling may test some viewers’ patience, but fans of Alex Garland’s singular talents will find much to chew on,” reads one critical consensus.

King took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express his thoughts on the series: “DEVS (Hulu/FX) is brainy, beautiful, and mind-bending. I was totally engrossed.”

He also cautioned: “If you decide to watch, go into it cold, knowing nothing. Better that way.”

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series received a 78 percent approval rating from viewers, based on over 500 ratings.

One viewer commented, “Great show. Modern existential philosophy delivered by superb actors in the guise of an intriguing thriller.”

Another viewer noted, “I’ve seen it twice, and the second time was even more rewarding than the first,” while someone else called it one of the ‘greatest sci-fi series of the last ten years,’ adding, “Truly outstanding.”

Over on Reddit, new fans expressed surprise at not having discovered the series sooner.

“Recently, I watched 3 Body Problem and wanted to look for another good show like it,” one user shared.

“Then I found Devs… Good storyline, philosophical and intellectually interesting. I’m like why I never heard of this show in 2021!”

Another user added, “Three Body and Devs are two of the best ever made.”

“It is a good show. Some really amazing moments. Maybe some acting issues but I think the story holds it all together,” commented another.

Devs is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
