Stephen King has shown admiration for a highly acclaimed Netflix series that fans claim features ‘the best twist’.
The renowned author often shares his TV show recommendations with his followers on social media.
Whether it’s a gripping series described as an ‘existential hell’ or a drama that rivals the quality of Queen’s Gambit, King is never short of viewing suggestions.
Among his must-watch list is a four-season anthology series, similar in format to the popular show Mindhunter, alongside one of his own adaptations.
Initially broadcast on USA Network from 2017 to 2021, the series became available on Netflix shortly after each season’s premiere.
According to FlixPatrol, viewers spent approximately 50 million hours watching the show between January 2023 and June 2025.
Each season of the crime-mystery drama presents a standalone story centered around Detective Harry Ambrose.
Portrayed by Bill Pullman, known for his role in Sleepless in Seattle, Harry delves into enigmatic crimes and explores what leads ordinary people to engage in extraordinary actions.
The first season centers on a young mother, Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel), who inexplicably commits murder on a beach.
While she confesses to the act, she cannot recall her reasons. Harry investigates her past, uncovering trauma and suppressed memories to understand her motives.
In the second season, Ambrose returns to his hometown following a boy’s shocking confession, while the final seasons focus on different criminal cases.
The series is titled The Sinner, and Stephen King called it ‘unbeatable entertainment’.
In 2021, he posted on X, previously known as Twitter, saying: “THE SINNER on Netflix and/or Apple+. MR. MERCEDES on Peacock.
“Three seasons of each show. Unbeatable entertainment.”
Despite concluding several years ago, The Sinner is still a topic of discussion among Reddit users.
In the R/Netflix community, someone inquired: “Which Netflix movie or show had the best twist?
“Netflix offers numerous movies and shows with unexpected twists. I’m curious which one surprised you the most and stayed with you.”
The overwhelming response was in favor of The Sinner. One comment stated: “The Sinner season one. Excellent storytelling.”
Another user concurred: “Yes! I enjoyed every season but lost interest in the final one.
“While it might be considered a slow burn, it didn’t feel that way. It held my attention and was worth the investment.”
One commenter mentioned they believed season one was ‘the only good season’, but the show’s Rotten Tomatoes ratings suggest otherwise.
Overall, The Sinner achieved a 92 percent approval rating from critics. The first season received 91 percent, the second season reached a peak of 97 percent, season three earned 92 percent, and the fourth season received 88 percent.
Critics praised its debut season, stating: “Smartly unpredictable and led by powerful performances from a talented cast, the darkly compelling The Sinner sinks its hooks in fast and doesn’t let go.”
Currently, all four seasons of The Sinner are available for streaming on Netflix.
