“Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s a flying dildo and it’s heading for the WNBA!”
Even I am surprised to be writing this, dear reader.
During a WNBA match between the Indiana Fever and the Sparks in Los Angeles on Tuesday (August 5), a sex toy was hurled from the stands.
The incident occurred with about two minutes remaining in the second quarter when the phallic object flew through the air, landing near Fever’s Sophie Cunningham. It was then kicked into the stands by Kelsey Plum.
Understandably, such an unexpected event requires a moment to process, and Cunningham was seen laughing as she walked over to the Sparks bench.
While other objects, such as pencils and children’s toys, have been known to find their way onto the court, a person was arrested a week prior in Atlanta during the fourth quarter of the Dream’s game against Golden State in College Park, Georgia.
The individual was ejected from the arena, facing a one-year ban, according to the WNBA.
Subsequently, on Friday, another sex toy was thrown in Chicago during the third quarter of Golden State’s 73-66 win over the Sky.
An official kicked it aside, and it was eventually removed and disposed of.
In response, the league issued a statement: “The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans.
“In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.”
However, there appears to be a reason for the incident in Los Angeles.
It seems a fan took Cunningham’s previous comments as a challenge.
On August 2, she tweeted in response to recent occurrences on the court: “Stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us.”
Unfortunately, even Cunningham realized she had jinxed herself as she quote retweeted her earlier comment, writing: “This did NOT age well.”
She also addressed the tweet on Instagram, telling her followers: “No way that thing actually hit me. I knew I shouldn’t have tweeted that.”
Ironically, her plea seemed to make her more of a target!
Following the latest incident, people online have been trying to express their thoughts and feelings.
Some were puzzled, with one user noting: “I thought the dildo guy was arrested? How is this still happening?”
Another suggested: “I refuse to believe this isn’t some type of marketing tactic.”
Others saw the humor, with one person stating: “Bro security fr gonna be checkin for dildos every WNBA game now.”
Someone else commented: “This is the most hilarious scandal of all time.”
