‘Super Messed Up Show’ Hailed as a Top Series of the 21st Century

Audiences are turning to social media to discuss a ‘dark, sick, twisted’ yet ‘addictive’ television series.

If you have already watched a dystopian film on Netflix that many users consider the best on the platform and are looking for a TV series to dive into, consider a show that spans five seasons and is based on a novel by the renowned author Margaret Atwood.

The American dystopian series, created by Bruce Miller, is adapted from Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name.

The cast includes notable actors such as Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man), Joseph Fiennes (Killing Me Softly), Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck), and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls).

The narrative focuses on the aftermath of a Second American Civil War, depicting a society where women are forced into slavery, prohibited from owning property, pursuing careers, or handling money. Some women are compelled to produce children and are referred to as ‘Handmaids.’

The series, known as The Handmaid’s Tale, premiered in 2016, with its first season winning an impressive eight Primetime Emmy Awards from 13 nominations. Over the course of its run, it has reached a total of five seasons, with a sixth and final season anticipated in 2025.

Despite receiving a modest 57 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Handmaid’s Tale has achieved a solid Tomatometer score of 83 percent, and its popularity continues to thrive on social media.

One viewer shared their opinion on the LADbible Facebook page Netflix Bangers, stating: “Whoever has ever recommended Handmaids Tale can never be trusted again. Such a terrible series.”

However, a large number of fans have come forward to defend the show.

One Facebook user commented: “Phenomenal show. Although it’s frustrating to watch it it’s still so good.”

Another user wrote: “U have to persevere with it. I remember watching this and thinking, what the hell am I watching, it’s dark and sick and twisted but it’s addictive.”

A third comment read: “I mean, it’s disturbing AF, but it’s a great series, how it’s written, the storyline, costumes, and premise. Again, scary AF.”

“One of the best things ever made for TV… has so many levels and meanings. Layered like an onion!!” stated another fan.

Additionally, someone cautioned: “You have to be in a good place mentally to watch that show.”

The Handmaid’s Tale is available on Hulu, Disney Plus, Fandango at Home, Prime Video, or Apple TV.
