Taylor Swift made one non negotiable demand before her Graham Norton appearance

Graham Norton has shared how Taylor Swift reacted when she learned someone might need to be dropped from his chat show lineup to make room for her after she was added at the last minute.

Swift appeared on The Graham Norton Show in October 2025 while promoting her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, which had recently been released.

Her booking came together so late that the programme had already filled its roster of guests, creating a problem behind the scenes.

Speaking to GQ, Norton explained what the team was facing when Swift was approached.

“The last time, she was a very last minute booking, the show was fully booked. So we thought, ‘We’re going to have to bump someone’.”

According to Norton, Swift was not comfortable with the idea that another guest would be removed for her appearance.

“Word came back from Taylor: ‘No one must be bumped.’ And that was a good show to be on because everyone ended up in the ‘Opalite’ music video. Everyone!”

With the lineup left intact, Swift joined Cillian Murphy, Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith and Lewis Capaldi on the famous red sofa, with Norton himself also making a cameo in the finished video.

When Swift released the “Opalite” music video on February 6, before posting it more widely to YouTube on February 8, viewers saw that Norton was right: the guests from that episode all appeared in it.

Swift wrote and directed the video herself, framing the story through a 1990s-inspired visual style centered on romance and emotional connection.

In the clip, her character crosses paths with Gleeson’s, and the two go from strangers to a couple as the story follows their relationship.

Swift later discussed how the concept came together in a post on X, saying it began while she was doing press for The Life of a Showgirl and making an appearance on a programme she considers one of her favourites.

She also said she felt especially fortunate when she discovered who else would be on the couch with her, describing them as people whose work she had long admired.

“When we were all talking during the broadcast, Domhnall made a light-hearted joke about wanting to be in one of my music videos. He’s Irish! He was joking! Except that in that moment during the interview, I was instantly struck with an *idea*.

“And so a week later, he received an email script I’d written for the ‘Opalite’ video, where he was playing the starring role. I had this thought that it would be wild if all of our fellow guests on the Graham Norton show that night, including Graham himself, could be a part of it too. Like a school group project but for adults and it isn’t mandatory.”

Everyone agreed to take part, turning the idea into a full collaboration between Swift, Norton and the rest of that night’s panel.

“I had more fun than I ever imagined—Made new friends, metaphors, and fashion choices. It was an absolute thrill to create this story and these characters. Shot on film.”
