Teen, 19, becomes sixth victim to die from ‘poisoning’ linked to drinks at popular party town

A teenager from Australia has been identified as the sixth individual suspected to have died from methanol poisoning in Laos.

Holly Bowles, a 19-year-old from Melbourne, died on Friday, November 22, at a Bangkok hospital, merely a day after the passing of her close friend, Bianca Jones.

Bianca, also 19, succumbed in a Thai hospital following illnesses reported by several individuals in Vang Vieng, a favored destination for backpackers, last week.

Holly’s family shared their grief in a statement: “It is with broken hearts, and we are so sad to say that our beautiful girl Holly is now at peace. We find comfort and solace in knowing that Holly bought so much joy and happiness to so many people. Holly was living her best life travelling through South East Asia meeting new friends and enjoying incredible experiences. As her parents we were always so incredibly proud of everything Holly did. Holly was an amazing big sister to James and she always looked out for him.”

Holly and Bianca had been vacationing at a resort when they became sick after reportedly drinking beverages containing methanol.

Methanol, although toxic to humans, is occasionally added to drinks to inexpensively increase their alcohol content.

Bianca’s family also expressed their sorrow in a statement: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news that our beloved daughter and sister, Bianca Jones, has passed away. She was surrounded by love, and we are comforted by the knowledge that her incredible spirit touched so many lives during her time with us. We want to express our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming support, love, and prayers we’ve received from across Australia. The kindness shown to our family during this unimaginable time has been truly humbling.”

Four additional fatalities have occurred, including a 56-year-old American and a 28-year-old British lawyer named Simone White.

The Danish Ministry for Foreign Affairs has verified that two women from Denmark also lost their lives.

No charges have been made in connection with the incident, although several individuals have been detained for questioning.

The Nana Backpacker Hostel, which reportedly offered free shots in the preceding days, remains operational but is not taking in new guests or reservations.

The hostel’s manager stated that over 100 guests received the complimentary drinks, and no other guests reported any adverse effects.

The exact location where the tainted drinks were served remains unclear.
