A 16-year-old girl fought off a sexual assault during her morning walk to a Northern California high school last Saturday, according to police.
The student was en route to Alisal High School in Salinas, a city in Monterey County just south of the San Francisco Bay Area, when a man approached her from behind and attacked her, the Salinas Police Department said. The teen resisted the assailant’s advances and managed to escape, police added.

Officers identified and arrested 30-year-old Jose Ramirez Zurita with assistance from surveillance footage and witness statements. Authorities utilized a Ramey warrant, a judicial tool that permits arrest before formal charges are filed by prosecutors. Zurita was taken into custody wearing a hoodie with long black hair, according to police.
The assault is considered random, with no known prior connection between Zurita and the victim, authorities said. The girl’s identity has been withheld due to her age and the nature of the crime.
In the viral moment that prompted widespread concern across the region, a teenage student walking to a campus in a working-class agricultural city was targeted in broad daylight by a stranger. The case has drawn attention to safety for students commuting on foot in Salinas, where Alisal High School serves as part of the Salinas Union High School District.
Police are actively seeking additional information about Zurita and whether other individuals may have encountered him. Detective Dorantes can be reached at 831-758-7148 for tips.
“Please always stay vigilant, be aware of your surroundings, and talk to your kids and young adults about how to remain safe,” Salinas police said in a public statement.
The case remains under investigation as prosecutors review evidence for potential charges. No court date has been publicly announced for Zurita’s initial appearance.
Zurita is expected to face a hearing later this month in Monterey County.
