A British judge spared a former teenage prison guard prison time after she sent explicit content to a killer inmate, saying he was baffled a 19-year-old woman had been placed in a men’s facility.
Samantha Stowell, now 23, received a six-month sentence suspended for 24 months at Manchester Crown Court after pleading guilty to misconduct in public office. The offense covered her three-month relationship with Conor Dobson, a prisoner at HMP Manchester in northwest England, between March 2022 and August 2023.
Stowell was 19 when she began working at the prison and struck up the romance with Dobson, who was serving a sentence for killing a grandmother in a hit-and-run crash. She sent him explicit pictures and videos of herself in her underwear, video-called him topless, and exchanged romantic messages in which she called herself “his princess.”
Judge Patrick Field pointed to Stowell’s age as a decisive factor in keeping her out of custody. “I will leave it to others to question how it was that a 19-year-old girl is sent into Manchester Prison — into the lion’s den,” he said during sentencing.
The court heard that Stowell received cash from Dobson through his relatives, including nearly $700 for a “dinner date,” more than $300 for jewelry, and over $250 for a hair appointment. She was fired in August 2023 after failing to return to work, and when police questioned her, she admitted she had “been stupid and didn’t want to go to prison.” She also told investigators she had “appreciated” Dobson’s attention following a breakup with a previous boyfriend.
Her defense attorney described Stowell as “mortified, embarrassed and full of regret.”
Beyond the suspended sentence, Stowell must complete 15 rehabilitation days, perform 250 hours of community service, and pay approximately $350 in costs.
The case drew particular attention for the judge’s sharp critique of prison staffing decisions, with Field openly questioning the wisdom of assigning a teenage woman to supervise male inmates convicted of serious violent offenses.
