Terrifying footage reveals why going overboard can be a ‘death trap’

People around the world are believed to suffer from Thalassophobia, a profound fear of the ocean.

The ocean’s vast expanse or the myriad of creatures that lurk below might make some individuals reluctant to take a plunge.

For those fearless of the sea, a startling TikTok video might just alter your perspective, with some viewers describing the ocean as a ‘death trap’.

This video, shared by TikTok user @thetrevorlopez in 2023, depicts someone pouring a drink from a cup into the ocean while positioned on an oil platform.

Accompanied by the chilling caption ‘Welcome to the deep blue death trap’, the video captures something quite unsettling. Take a look at the spine-tingling footage below:

As soon as the liquid hits the water, a flurry of fish emerges, seemingly from nowhere, swarming the spot.

Some TikTok users quickly surmised that the fish appear in anticipation of any food entering the water, reacting with speed.

Others noted that such occurrences should serve as a caution against diving into the open sea.

“This is exactly what I think of every time I hear about someone jumping off a cruise ship,” one user commented.

Another added, “All I can think about is that dude who jumped in and his friends just watched him.”

The original poster responded, saying: “I’ll jump in when I get off one day and let ya’ll know how it goes. The fish aren’t scary but the sharks that are deeper [are].”

Recently, other videos have surfaced highlighting the behavior of fish when actual food is thrown into the ocean.

Earlier, a clip gained popularity on Reddit’s OddlySatisfying board, showing a person tossing an apple into the sea from an oil rig.

Within moments, numerous fish converge, circle the apple, devour it, and then quickly disperse, revealing the abundant marine life beneath the water’s surface.

A Reddit user explained: “These fish are probably waiting for food items to be dropped.

“The camera is set up to record a phenomenon that had been observed before so we can guess the workers and fish already have a bit of a relationship going.

“The fish are primed to expect and react to the apple. Also, it’s probably easier to see items falling from the sky from beneath a couple of feet of water than we estimate it to be; they would appear as silhouettes against a bright background.”

Strange, isn’t it?
