A horror film featuring “insane gore” has been so terrifying that viewers have claimed it unlocked a “new fear.” Now, anyone with a Netflix subscription can experience this for themselves.
Spoilers ahead…
When done right, horror films can be a literal nightmare, exposing new fears you never even considered.
Take the Final Destination series as an example, a master in this realm.
I had never worried about driving behind a truck loaded with logs until I saw someone get flattened in the second film of that series.
Do I often drive behind a truck full of logs? No. But it remains one of my greatest unrealized fears.
The film in question is a horror movie that is part of a legendary franchise, and its reviews reflect that.
It boasts an impressive 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, and fans raved about it, leading to a box office success of $149 million on a budget just shy of $20 million.
This film was added to Netflix this week and quickly climbed to number two in the US, second only to The Garfield Movie, which has its own terrifying moments.
Here’s the trailer for the horror film:
The movie in question is Evil Dead Rise, the fifth entry in the Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell franchise.
The film’s synopsis reads: “A reunion between two estranged sisters gets cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.”
The scene that has caused this newfound phobia involves a kitchen utensil used in a rather creative manner.
In one part of the film, one of the main characters, Bridget, becomes possessed and starts attacking her aunt, Beth.
She grabs a cheese grater and scrapes it down her calf in an attempt to harm her.
This moment has led to shocked reactions online. One viewer posted: “I’m usually a pretty quiet movie watcher, but the moment in Evil Dead Rise involving a cheese grater had me actually screaming. Lee Cronin, you’re pretty f***ed up, good job!”
Another commented: “Evil Dead Rise synopsis: cheese grater fear unlocked”.
A third chimed in: “Lee Cronin understood the damn assignment. Creative kills, unique household items used as weapons, practical effects body horror, manic laughing deadites and circus-level contortionism.”
Reviews have largely been positive since the film was added to Netflix. One fan tweeted: “Evil Dead Rise starts off slow and then refuses to take its foot off the gas.
“Insane gore and terror all of the way through mixed with incredible performances all round.
“Definitely a must-see for horror fans.”
Evil Dead Rise is now available on Netflix in the US.
