Terrifying Moment a Woman Intervenes in Bush Struggle Between Koala and Python

A Queensland dog walker has spoken out after footage of her rescuing a baby koala from a python went viral across Australia.

Nell, whose last name has been withheld, encountered the life-or-death struggle last week while walking her dog through bushland in Queensland. The commotion drew her toward a python that had coiled itself around an infant koala, slowly constricting the joey as its mother frantically tried to intervene.

“Poor mom was clawing at the python, trying to set her baby free. The joey looked straight at me, and I just saw the panic in its face,” Nell told news.com.au.

With her dog still tied to her, Nell threw her phone to the ground and rushed in without hesitation. She later explained the urgency that drove her to act, noting that pythons can cause broken bones, organ damage, or oxygen deprivation within a narrow window of time.

“I didn’t really think in that moment; I just threw my phone on the ground and started separating the two. I didn’t know how long it was constricted for, and there’s a short window to act before a python can cause injuries such as broken bones, organ damage or lack of oxygen,” she said.

She managed to untangle the snake and free the joey unharmed, then watched the mother and baby reunite and scramble up a tree together. The snake also escaped without injury.

“I’m glad it was a happy ending; seeing Joey and Mom cuddling was pure bliss,” Nell recalled.

The video she recorded has since accumulated millions of views and thousands of comments. While many viewers praised her bravery, others contended that she should have let nature take its course. Nell rejected that framing entirely, arguing that this was not a genuine circle-of-life moment but rather a dangerous mismatch that threatened both animals.

“The python was capable of killing the koala, but much too small to actually ingest it. I think it was opportunistic and overestimated its potential meal. Pythons can survive weeks or even months without a meal, and there is plenty of other food sources available to him that are more appropriately sized,” she pointed out.

She extended that defense to the snake itself, refusing to cast it as a villain in the encounter.

“He is not the villain; he was just an opportunist in a fragmented environment,” she said.

Nell’s intervention came from years of experience working with native wildlife, a background that has left her deeply concerned about Australia’s conservation failures. She shared the footage specifically to push for broader awareness and government action.

“Conservation of all native species is important to me. I have seen so much trauma in wildlife and destruction of their habitat in my many years of working with native animals; it’s something you don’t forget,” she explained.

“The government not only doesn’t do enough to protect them, but also contributes to it. Australia has the highest extinction rate in the world. It’s up to us to do something about it before we lose any more species,” she added.

Koalas remain on the endangered list with slow reproductive rates, making each individual loss potentially significant for the species. Nell emphasized that habitat destruction sits at the root of nearly every threat they face, from vehicle strikes and urban displacement to predation, bushfires, and disease.

“They already face so many other challenges that make their species vulnerable,” she said.

“They all stem from habitat destruction. It leads to them crossing roads and getting hit, being displaced in urban environments, being prone to predation, lacking food sources as they have a specialised diet that can’t be supplemented; they face bushfires, disease, displacement and so much more,” she continued.

She hopes the viral attention translates into concrete action, urging viewers to volunteer with wildlife organizations and pressure government bodies for stronger protections.
