A Texas airport dog has been crowned the TSA’s 2026 “Cutest Canine” after his goofy photos sent the internet into a frenzy.
Bolt, a 3-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer who works at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), beat out 84 other dogs to win the agency’s annual contest, the TSA announced Wednesday. The bomb-sniffing pup became the third shorthaired pointer to claim the title in the last four years.
The TSA shared video of Bolt bouncing around the terminal, leaping feet into the air, gnawing on a tennis ball, and eventually flopping down for belly rubs. The clip was set to Dolly Parton’s hit song “9 to 5.”
“I am ecstatic for Bolt,” handler Daphne Wang said. “He is such a character and a hard-working little guy. He absolutely loves his job and coming to work.”
Bolt’s official photo shoot produced a rapid-fire spread of viral images. He flashed a wide-eyed stare, a goofy over-the-shoulder glance, and a toothy grin that looked remarkably like a human smile.
“This picture really takes me out,” Fox 5 Atlanta reporter Alex Whittler said on air Thursday.
Whittler attempted to read Bolt’s bio during the broadcast but dissolved into giggles alongside meteorologist Marquise Meda when the toothy photo appeared on screen.
“Oh my gosh this is not happening,” Whittler said through her laughs. “This is a real tear that I just leaked out.”
The anchor could not finish the segment. “Please just do the final weather,” Whittler said as she wiped tears from her face, turning to Meda to close the show.
The TSA celebrated Bolt’s win on social media with a post that read: “PAWS the press…… and roll out the red carpet for BOLT. Your reigning 2026 TSA Cutest Canine! He’s DFW’s very own goofball extraordinaire. This GSP sniffs out trouble with 100% focus and 110% silliness. Congrats to the most goodest boi!”
Bolt took the crown from 2025 winner Steeler, a Labrador retriever at Pittsburgh International Airport. This year’s other finalists were Ember, a Labrador at Orlando International; Epic, another Pittsburgh Labrador who works alongside Steeler; and Xaro, a German shepherd from St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
“I am so happy he gets to show the world his quirky personality. It’s definitely an adventure working with Bolt every day,” Wang said. “There is nothing ordinary about him. He works hard and plays even harder. He is always in working mode, even at home. He is never short on energy and is always 1,000% excited to go to work.”
Social media users quickly fell for Bolt, though not all their questions were practical. “I need to pet hims… How do I arrange a pets sesh?” one commenter asked, despite Bolt wearing a vest that told travelers not to pet him. “If I bring drugs to the airport can I meet Bolt?” another quipped. The American Kennel Club weighed in with its own endorsement: “Employee of the year alert.”
