Thailand princess dies at 47 after years in coma as royal family issues statement

Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand has been confirmed dead at the age of 47, following more than three years in a coma.

Thailand’s Bureau of the Royal Household said the princess died on the evening of June 11, 2026, at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok, where she had been receiving treatment since collapsing in December 2022.

Princess Bajrakitiyabha, also widely known in Thailand as Princess Bha or Princess Pa, was the eldest child of King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Born on December 7, 1978, she was long regarded as one of the most prominent members of the royal family and carried out a range of legal, diplomatic and charitable duties.

She had a background in law and public service, and was particularly known for her work on justice issues, including projects linked to prisoners’ rights, legal aid and social welfare. Over the years, she also represented Thailand in diplomatic roles abroad and took part in a number of royal engagements tied to the judiciary, public health and women’s issues.

The princess was hospitalized after suddenly losing consciousness in December 2022. Thai royal statements at the time said she had suffered a heart-related emergency, and later updates described prolonged critical illness. Her condition had remained a source of public concern in Thailand ever since.

News of her death has prompted mourning across the country, with reports of people gathering outside the Bangkok hospital following the official announcement. As the king’s eldest daughter, she had been seen as one of the most visible and respected figures in the Thai monarchy.

Further updates are expected, including details of royal mourning arrangements and funeral rites.
