After an emotional phone call to her counsellor, Charlotte Rose Ford, a student at Manchester University, UK, was left a heartwarming note and £20 by a stranger who overheard her troubles.
Charlotte struggles with mental health issues, so she often has to ask for mitigating circumstances when handing in university work.
She explained to the Mirror: “Mental health stuff is hard at uni and sometimes I struggle to get my work done to a standard I’m happy with, or I’m too anxious that my work isn’t good enough.”
Charlotte admits the call explaining her situation to a university counsellor was an emotional one. “I mentioned that I needed a letter for a mitigating circumstances form. I’d been to the doctor but they would charge me £20 for it, which I can’t always spare.”
But then something amazing happened: “A waitress came up, put a cup of coffee in front of me and said, ‘this is for you, someone sent it over.'”
The note, above, reads, “I hope you don’t mind that I overheard. Just wanted to say don’t worry! I’ve been there, I thought I wouldn’t get through my undergrad and now I’m doing a PhD.”
Containing two ten pound notes, the mysterious message said, “This is for the doctor’s note. You’ll get through it!”
Charlotte says she burst into tears when she received the thoughtful gift in the student union. “I was so overwhelmed by it! I don’t know who it was that sent it to me but I want to thank them so much.”
“They made my day and made me feel so much better.”
