Warning: this article contains spoilers for seasons 4 and 5 of Stranger Things
The finale of Stranger Things included a subtle homage to Eddie Munson.
As viewers of the series are aware, the beloved character Eddie met a tragic end at the conclusion of season 4 in a valiant and selfless manner.
In summary, Eddie ventured into the Upside Down along with the rest of the group to confront Vecna. Max positions herself in the Creel House to lure Vecna to her, while Nancy, Steve, and Robin devise a plan to attack Vecna’s physical form.
Meanwhile, a massive horde of Demobats requires distraction, prompting Eddie to climb onto the roof of the Upside Down version of his home and play his electric guitar at full blast to divert their attention.
Initially, Eddie was meant to escape with Dustin, but realizing they needed more time to reach Vecna, he chose to sacrifice himself to keep the Demobats occupied. In the end, he succumbed to injuries inflicted by the creatures, dying in Dustin’s embrace.
Here’s a little reminder for you:
Dustin and Stranger Things fans worldwide were heartbroken by Eddie’s death. In season five, Dustin strives to honor his late friend’s memory by continuing to wear the Hellfire Club shirt to school.
The most poignant tribute to Eddie, however, comes during Dustin’s valedictorian speech at their graduation, which you might have overlooked.
In a scene from season four, Eddie expressed his desire to graduate by flipping off the principal before taking his diploma and making a hasty exit.
Tragically, Eddie did not live to see his graduation, so Dustin fulfilled his wish by giving Mr. Higgins the middle finger as he concluded his unconventional speech.
Ross Duffer explained that this moment was a nod to Eddie.

“A lot of [the speech] was inspired by Eddie — even at the end where he rips the diploma and flips off the principal, which is something that Eddie said he wanted to do,” Ross shared with TUDUM.
“Much of it pays tribute to Eddie and what Hellfire stood for. A considerable portion of Dustin’s remarks touches on one of the show’s central themes — it’s a narrative about outsiders and misfits. It’s about coming together and embracing uniqueness to combat the world’s dark forces.”
Matt Duffer added, “The essence of Dustin’s speech is that the events that transpired brought together people who might never have crossed paths otherwise, enriching their lives in the process.”
