The Unexpected Net Worth of Pope Francis at His Passing: Insights into His Final Will

The financial status of Pope Francis at the time of his passing has been disclosed following the death of the Roman Catholic Church leader at the age of 88.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis had been experiencing health issues recently, having suffered from a respiratory infection and chronic bronchitis that escalated into pneumonia in both lungs, alongside mild kidney issues.

Although it appeared that Pope Francis was recovering after being released from the hospital earlier this month, the Vatican announced on Monday (April 21) that he passed away at 7:35 am local time.

Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Farrell stated: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7.35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father.

“His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalized.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite, merciful love of God, One and Tribune.″

According to The Mirror, Francis’ net worth was reportedly close to $16 million at the time of his death, despite not accepting a salary since assuming the papacy in 2013.

Throughout his papacy, Francis made numerous decisions that highlighted his inclination towards a modest lifestyle.

As Pope, he was entitled to an annual sum of $385,000, which now could be allocated to a foundation, passed down to a family member, or even donated back to the church.

Despite his substantial wealth, Francis dedicated his life to assisting those less fortunate, including a notable moment of helping the homeless in his native Buenos Aires.

Contrary to many of his predecessors, Pope Francis chose not to reside in the Papal Palace.

Instead, he preferred a more humble living arrangement.

Following the announcement of his death, tributes for Francis have been widespread, including one from Vice President JD Vance.

Vance, a convert to Catholicism, had met with Francis on Easter Sunday (20 April), merely a day before the Pope’s passing.

The vice president expressed his condolences on Twitter.

Vance wrote: “I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him.

“I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful.”
