Thomas Markle released back to dementia care facility after his first court appearance

Thomas Markle Sr. Has been released on bond and ordered back to the Florida dementia care facility where federal agents arrested him just hours earlier.

The 82-year-old father of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, appeared before Federal Magistrate Judge Lindsay Griffin on Friday after FBI agents took him into custody at the Maravida Senior Living care home in Lakeland, Florida. Markle, who was wheeled into the courtroom by two US Marshals wearing a black T-shirt and black pants, secured his release through a bond hearing that both prosecution and defense agreed to hold the same day as his arrest.

Judge Griffin explained that Markle must undergo evaluation to determine whether he comprehends the charges he faces. “It’s important in the circumstances, given Mr Markle’s age and health condition, that there is an evaluation to determine he understands the nature and consequences of the proceedings against him,” she told the court. “He shall not use or have access to an electronic device capable of connecting to the internet,” she added.

The arrest followed searches of two storage units Markle rented in the Los Angeles area, conducted by FBI agents on October 30 and November 4. According to a federal criminal complaint, agents seized approximately 78 items including material suspected to contain child sexual abuse imagery. The complaint further alleges that Thomas Sr. Appears in two images alongside an underage girl.

The Florida investigation connected to an earlier probe by the Cebu City Police Office in the Philippines. Child sexual abuse material had allegedly been discovered in Markle’s home there and turned over to local police by his son, Thomas Markle Jr.

Thomas Sr. Vehemently denied those initial claims to the outlet after his son went public. “I’m shocked, I’m hurt and I’m very upset that my son is making these accusations against me,” he told the outlet. “I could never do what I’m being accused of. It’s the worst thing anyone could accuse me of.”

Meghan’s half-sister, Samantha Markle, also defended their father, accusing their brother of fabricating the allegations for personal financial gain.

Days after the brother’s claims surfaced, reports said that one of its reporters found additional materials in Thomas Sr.’s abandoned storage unit in Mexico, including books about pedophilia, magazines showing children being sexually abused, and several loose photographs of young naked Asian females.

Markle had been living at the Maravida Senior Living care home when federal agents took him into custody on Friday. The facility specializes in dementia care, and his attorney’s statement about his inability to recall his passport’s location underscored questions about his cognitive state that Judge Griffin’s evaluation order is designed to address.
