Thousands of fans lined the streets of a Welsh seaside village on Saturday as Bonnie Tyler’s coffin was brought home ahead of her funeral.
The “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer, 75, died on July 8 at a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she had been treated since emergency intestinal surgery in May. Her body was returned to Mumbles, the coastal district of Swansea where she maintained a home, as mourners gathered along Newton Road from 3:15 p.m. BST to witness the procession.
The hearse carried her coffin draped in the Welsh flag, with a framed photograph of the singer visible through a rolled-down rear window. Fans threw flowers onto the vehicle’s hood and swarmed the car to create a driving path, while others left floral tributes outside her former residence.
Carys Edwards, 18, spoke to Sky News at the scene about the singer’s enduring connection to her homeland. “She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales,” Edwards said. “Her songs really did touch a lot of people here in Wales; we loved her a lot.”
Edwards’s mother, Melanie Smith, stressed to Sky News that Tyler never forgot her roots despite global fame. “Most importantly, she was a Swansea girl, and she didn’t forget that,” Smith said.
Michael Bone, 58, and his partner Alan Hawkins, 54, travelled from Derby to attend the tribute. Bone said that Tyler’s music had been particularly important to him during his teenage years in the 1980s.
Tyler was born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, about seven miles outside Swansea, growing up in public housing as a coal miner’s daughter with three sisters and two brothers. She began her music career just before turning 18, eventually scoring her first hit with 1976’s “Lost in France.”
Her distinctive raspy voice resulted from a 1976 vocal cord surgery when she spoke during recovery against medical advice — a seeming tragedy that instead created one of pop’s most recognizable vocal signatures. She earned three Grammy nominations and in 2013 represented Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest with “Believe in Me,” finishing 19th. Queen Elizabeth II honored her as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2022 for services to music.
Tyler had maintained close links with Wales throughout a career that spanned sixteen studio albums, while also dividing her time between Wales and Portugal’s Algarve region. “Portugal was my favourite place in the whole world,” she once said of her second home.
In the viral moment that preceded her death, Tyler was hospitalized in Faro in May for emergency intestinal surgery. A day later, she was placed in a medically induced coma to assist recovery. “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital,” a statement shared on her social media sites read. “The surgery went well, and she is now recuperating.” The statement continued: “We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”
Her spokesperson announced at the time of her death: “We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.” Tyler’s official cause of death has not been released.
Despite health setbacks including knee washout procedures, Tyler had remained active and optimistic. “I’m fit enough at the moment, touch wood, and I’m really enjoying doing the shows,” she told Hello! Magazine in March. “I’m still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything,” She added that she did home Pilates for just 20 minutes daily in hotel rooms.
Tyler was scheduled to kick off her 2026 European tour in Malta on May 22, with 27 shows planned through March 2027 including a December date at Cardiff’s Utilita Arena. Her last studio album, “The Best Is Yet to Come,” arrived in 2021, and her final performance took place March 19 at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
A celebration of life for family and friends will take place at Swansea Minster, St. Mary’s Church, before the singer makes a final journey through her hometown of Skewen.
