Maurice Harrison, widely recognized by her social media alias ‘Girlalala’, has tragically passed away at the age of 21.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office released a statement indicating that officers responded to a medical emergency in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida around 7pm on Friday, November 14. They discovered an ‘individual in the front passenger seat of a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds.’
The person was identified as social media influencer Girlalala, who was quickly taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Harrison, originally from Pompano Beach, gained popularity as a hairstylist by posting videos and images of her work and personal life, accumulating over 300,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram.
She was renowned for her vibrant and inventive hairstyles and even described herself as a “wig influencer” on her TikTok profile.
Shanoyd Whyte Jr, her longtime boyfriend, has been identified as the suspect and was taken into custody on Nov. 14, facing charges of first-degree murder with a firearm. He is currently being held without bail.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office allege that the incident stemmed from a ‘verbal argument which turned physical’ inside Whyte Jr.’s vehicle.
“At some point, the victim was shot while sitting in the car,” stated the police report.
It has been reported that Harrison and Whyte Jr. were in a relationship for multiple years before her tragic death.
A GoFundMe campaign to support Harrison’s funeral expenses has exceeded $28,000, with a notable $5000 contribution from rapper JT.
JT paid her respects on social media, writing: “Rest beautiful girlala! We love you & Heaven will never be boring now that you are there, your boldness, energy, humor & beauty will be missed! You never missed a chance to show me love & for that I’m forever grateful.”
“I’m sorry this happened to you!” she added.
The post also included the hashtags “#protecttranswomen” and “#protectblackwomen”.
After the news of her passing, numerous fans visited Harrison’s social media profiles to offer their condolences, and her family also expressed gratitude on the GoFundMe page.
They stated: “As a family we appreciate every prayer, kind thought, and gesture during our time of bereavement.”
The family mentioned that additional information on contributing to her final arrangements would be provided once plans with the funeral home were finalized.
