Trump admits DoorDash stunt was ‘tacky’ after bizarre White House delivery caused controversy

Donald Trump thinks the DoorDash McDelivery stunt this week was ‘a little tacky’.

A recent White House promo moment featuring the president ordering McDonald’s via DoorDash has been making the rounds online, leaving many people unsure what they’d just watched.

On Monday, Trump appeared on camera with two McDelivery-style bags, as DoorDash described it as the first time it had made a delivery inside the Oval Office.

The driver was Sharon Simmons, seen wearing a “DoorDash Grandma” shirt. In the footage, she’s heard describing the contents of the familiar brown bags as Trump’s “favorite”. The White House later said the bags contained cheeseburgers and fries.

Simmons, who is from Arkansas, also thanked the president for his “no tax on tips” policy, which he has previously discussed as part of his “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”.

Trump later brought up the moment during a Thursday roundtable in Las Vegas, where he was again promoting the “no tax on tips” policy.

“It was a little bit of a, you know, I mean to be honest, it was a little tacky,” he said, as the crowd laughed.

“When we do these things in politics, they’re a little embarrassing, but we do them,” he added, arguing that these kinds of made-for-camera events can help drive big election wins by ‘landslides’.

The White House has said Simmons has been a “full-time Dasher since 2021”. Speaking about the policy’s impact, she said: “It’s good. It has helped my family out immensely and I definitely appreciate it.”

In comments shared by DoorDash, Simmons described the White House appearance as an “incredible honour” to represent the company.

“Thanks to DoorDash, I have been able to provide for my family while keeping the schedule that works best for me, something I never thought would be possible,” she continued.

“Now No Tax on Tips has taken things to the next level, letting me keep more of the tips I earn and deserve.”

Trump reportedly handed Simmons a $100 tip, and she is said to have earned $11,000 in tips in 2025.

The “no tax on tips” policy does not fully remove taxes on tips. Instead, it would allow qualifying workers to deduct up to $25,000 of tip income per year for a limited period, The Guardian reports. Workers would still have to report all tips as income and could still owe other taxes, including payroll taxes and state taxes.

Online reaction to the McDelivery moment was divided, with some social media users accusing DoorDash and the White House of presenting the event in a misleading way.

Others criticized DoorDash for aligning itself with the Trump administration at all.

“Dear @DoorDash I just deleted your app. I don’t do business with corporations that do business with @realDonaldTrump. If I’m not alone, then you should be out of business very soon,” wrote one customer on X.

“No one is claiming it was a real delivery,” said DoorDash’s head of public affairs Julian Crowley, on social media.

“It was clearly and obviously a planned event to mark a new policy starting. To claim Sharon is a prop, plant or an actor is totally wrong and off base. She is a Dasher and she participated to support the policy that benefits her.”
