Donald Trump is expressing intense displeasure following a US court ruling that deemed his tariffs as ‘unconstitutional’ and illegal.
Throughout Trump’s presidency, tariffs have been a focal point, as he proposed ‘reciprocal tariffs’ on trading partners during what he called ‘Liberation Day’ in April.
Despite granting several extensions for partners to renegotiate agreements, many tariffs were implemented earlier this month.
However, the US Court of Appeals ruled that the president did not have the legal authority to declare national emergencies for the purpose of imposing import taxes globally.
Although the court largely supported a previous decision by a federal trade court to cut the tariffs immediately, the new ruling provides the Trump administration an opportunity to appeal to the Supreme Court.
As a result, the tariffs remain in place for the time being.
Trump addressed the situation on his Truth Social account on Thursday, expressing his frustration in a heated post.
“ALL TARIFFS ARE STILL IN EFFECT!” he stated. “Today a Highly Partisan Appeals Court incorrectly said that our Tariffs should be removed, but they know the United States of America will win in the end. If these Tariffs ever went away, it would be a total disaster for the Country.
“It would make us financially weak, and we have to be strong.
“The U.S.A. will no longer tolerate enormous Trade Deficits and unfair Tariffs and Non Tariff Trade Barriers imposed by other Countries, friend or foe, that undermine our Manufacturers, Farmers, and everyone else.”
Trump warned that accepting the decision would ‘literally destroy’ the US, emphasizing his intention to maintain the tariffs.
He further added, “At the start of this Labor Day weekend, we should all remember that TARIFFS are the best tool to help our Workers, and support Companies that produce great MADE IN AMERICA products. For many years, Tariffs were allowed to be used against us by our uncaring and unwise Politicians.
“Now, with the help of the United States Supreme Court, we will use them to the benefit of our Nation, and Make America Rich, Strong, and Powerful Again!”
Trump’s tariffs have caused turbulence in global markets, sparking concerns about potential increases in everyday goods’ prices and the possibility of slowing economic growth.
Sky News suggests that the ruling could require the Trump administration to refund some of the import taxes already collected.
