Donald Trump has stated that he is ending all trade discussions with Canada upon learning about an Ontario television advertisement critiquing his tariffs.
The United States and Canada have long maintained a close trade relationship.
However, tensions have risen between the two countries since Trump announced earlier this year his decision to impose tariffs on several nations, including key US allies.
These tensions have led to ongoing negotiations aimed at reaching a mutually beneficial trade agreement.
On October 23, Trump declared that the US would halt trade discussions with Canada after discovering a TV ad critical of US tariffs.
The Ontario advertisement features people from various sectors across the US, such as factories, shops, and farms, while a speech by former President Ronald Reagan is played over the visuals.
The 1987 Reagan speech, originally a radio address on free and fair trade, was edited for the ad.
In a Truth Social post, Trump stated: “The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs.
“The ad was for $75,000. They only did this to interfere with the decision of the US Supreme Court, and other courts. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation claimed that Ontario’s government used ‘selective audio and video’ without authorization and is exploring legal actions.
Although the advertisement edited various parts of the speech to form a concise message, the overall sentiment remains unchanged.
In the ad, Reagan’s voice states: “When someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports’, it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works — but only for a short time.
“Over the long run such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars.
“Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs.
“Throughout the world there’s a growing realization that the way to prosperity for all nations is rejecting protectionist legislation and promoting fair and free competition. America’s jobs and growth are at stake.”
The complete transcript of the speech is accessible on the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Museum website.
