Trump demands DOJ investigate Democrats after GOP’s midterm blowout

President Trump has ordered the Department of Justice to investigate Democratic lawmakers and threatened them with imprisonment over their post-election oversight plans.

The president fired off a lengthy Truth Social post on Saturday targeting multiple Democrats by name after his party suffered sweeping losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections. Trump, 78, framed the opposition party’s planned accountability measures as criminal extortion and demanded prosecutors turn the tables on them.

“The Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States, and others, with Impeachment and many other forms of punishment, even though they admit they have no reason to do so, and there have been no impeachable acts committed, or even thought of, by the victims of this illegal process,” he wrote.

“This is extortion at the highest level, and they should be held accountable for this.”

Trump’s post singled out Sen. Elissa Slotkin, the Michigan Democrat who drew Republican fury last month by urging a “deterrence message” to young college graduates considering Trump administration jobs. The president wrote that “the imprisonment should be against these EXTORTIONISTS, and Republicans should get smart, fast!”

He also accused Democrats of targeting Republican donors, writing: “Also, they’re threatening our Donors, some of the most respected people anywhere in the World, with imprisonment, and many other levels of punishment, just because they happen to be Republicans, or Republican supporters. This is Weaponization and Lawfare at another level.”

The outburst came a day after Trump installed Stephen Miller as his new chief of staff, tapping the hardline immigration enforcer for the top West Wing post.

Democrats have indeed escalated their rhetoric and planning since their electoral rout of Republicans. Rep. Robert Garcia, the California Democrat who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, warned administration figures to “lawyer up” in the aftermath of what the source text called the Democrats’ “Election Day tsunami.”

Two House Democrats, Reps. Hank Johnson of Georgia and Deborah Ross of North Carolina, this week floated impeaching U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche. Johnson characterized Blanche’s conduct as efforts to “undermine the rule of law.”

Rep. Jamie Raskin, the Maryland Democrat, and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker have each demanded probes of the Department of Government Efficiency, the cost-cutting body previously run by Elon Musk. The world’s richest man poured more than $400 million into the midterms backing Republican candidates.

Not all impeachment talk has come from Democrats. Rep. Thomas Massey, the Kentucky Republican whom Trump helped oust in a primary, has announced plans to force a vote on impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Trump’s demand for DOJ action against elected members of the opposition party represents a sharp break from the traditional American separation of powers, where Congress independently exercises oversight and impeachment authority without executive branch interference.

The president’s Saturday post made no distinction between Democrats’ constitutionally protected legislative activities and actual criminal conduct, instead labeling all of it “illegal process” and “Weaponization and Lawfare.”

The timing underscores Trump’s pivot toward confrontation after the midterm results, which saw Republicans lose ground across multiple battlegrounds despite Musk’s massive financial investment in the party’s campaigns.

Trump’s call to imprison political rivals over standard congressional oversight maneuvers arrives as he reshapes his inner circle for the remainder of his term.
