Trump labeled a ‘national embarrassment’ after remarks on state visit at royal dinner

Donald Trump’s speech during a state dinner on his UK visit has sparked controversy, with some critics labeling him a ‘national embarrassment.’

In February, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer extended an invitation from King Charles III to President Trump for what was described as a ‘truly historic’ and ‘unprecedented’ second state visit.

President Trump, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, arrived in the UK on Tuesday, September 16, and had a packed schedule on Wednesday, September 17.

They were welcomed at Windsor Castle by the Prince and Princess of Wales and later met with King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The day concluded with a state banquet at Windsor Castle, during which both President Trump and King Charles III delivered speeches.

As often happens with Trump’s speeches, this one was full of notable moments.

“It is a privilege to be the first American president welcomed here,” Trump remarked. “And if you think about it, a lot of presidents and this was the second state visit and that’s the first. Maybe that is going to be the last time — I hope it is, actually.

“This is truly one of the highest honours of my life, such respect for you [the King] and your country.”

The speech drew criticism on social media, with one person commenting: “Zero seconds without being a national embarrassment.”

Another said: “It’s classic Trump banter: a muddled timeline, a dash of self-congratulation, and a wink at legacy.”

The King’s speech focused on the enduring relationship between the US and the UK, stating: “Today, our alliance spans every field of endeavour and shows vast potential for growth.

“The United Kingdom was your partner in the first trade deal of your administration, Mr President, bringing jobs and growth to both our countries.

“And no doubt we can go even further as we build this new era of our partnership.”

Trump echoed the sentiments of a special relationship, stating: “We’re like two notes in one chord or two verses of the same prose.

“Each beautiful on its own, but really meant to be played together. The bond of kinship and identity between America and the United Kingdom is priceless and eternal.

“It’s irreplaceable and unbreakable.”

The banquet at Windsor Castle was attended by approximately 160 guests, including Sir Keir Starmer, Apple’s Tim Cook, and OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman.
