Trump makes strange comment to MMA fighter moments after win

President Trump drew attention at UFC 327 on Saturday night after making an unusual remark to a Brazilian MMA fighter who had just won, commenting on how “good looking” he was for someone who takes so much punishment in the cage.

The president attended the Miami card on April 11, continuing his long-running interest in combat sports, as reports circulated that discussions involving Vice President Vance and Iranian figures were beginning to unravel in Pakistan.

Trump arrived at the event with Secretary of State Rubio and made a high-profile walkout to Kid Rock’s ‘American Badass’ ahead of the main card. He then took a cageside seat for the light heavyweight title bout between Jiří Procházka and Carlos Ulberg.

Although Trump has been associated with fight nights for decades, dating back to the era of André the Giant, the reception in Miami was less uniform than usual. As he entered alongside UFC head Dana White, parts of the crowd could be heard booing.

The night featured several uncomfortable moments, including Trump appearing to pull Joe Rogan in for a quick private exchange after the commentator had spent significant time criticizing Trump’s conflict with Iran.

However, the moment that most stood out came after Paulo Costa stopped Russia’s Azamat Murzakanov by TKO. As Costa celebrated, he approached Trump at cageside to share a few words.

The 34-year-old Brazilian thanked the president directly, telling him: “Thank you for everything you’re doing.”

Trump’s response quickly became the talking point, as he focused more on Costa’s appearance than his performance in the cage.

“You’re a beautiful guy. You could be a model, you look so good,” the President of the United States said.

He added: “You’re too good looking to be a fighter. You are some fighter. Thank you, man.”

Later, when asked about the brief exchange, Costa said he found it amusing and suggested the conversation included some off-the-record banter.

“Then I just said some things that were personal, so let’s just keep it a secret for now. It was just between us.”

Anyone wanting to see Trump back around UFC fighters may not have to wait long. Another major event is already being teased with a significant setting.

The promotion is expected to mark America’s 250th birthday on June 14 with UFC Freedom 250, planned for the White House’s South Lawn.
