Brent Jindra, 48, is speaking out after his wife was detained by ICE at a California airport.
Galina Bobreneva, 40, was taken from her husband at an airport in California in July and transported to a holding cell in downtown Los Angeles in an unmarked vehicle, according to reports. The couple’s ordeal has drawn attention because Jindra is a staunch Trump and MAGA supporter who has voted for the president three times, citing immigration policies as a key reason.
Jindra has since said: “She did not jump a wall, she did not swim a river. She came in Trump’s beautiful, big front door.”
Bobreneva arrived in the US in 2021 and has stayed since the war with Ukraine broke out. Her lawyer said that she has a pending green card application and has always maintained lawful status in the country.
The Department of Homeland Security offered a different characterization in a statement to the outlet, claiming Bobreneva was “an illegal alien” who was targeted because “she overstayed her welcome in violation of our nation’s laws.”
“To be clear, work authorisation or a pending application do NOT confer legal status in the United States,” the agency added.
Jindra has suggested that he was drawn to the MAGA movement precisely because of its strict approach to immigration, which he hoped would reduce illegal entry of criminals into the country. He has indicated he never expected those same enforcement mechanisms to affect his own wife.
“A US citizen just watched his wife get dragged away and had no idea where she’s going,” recalled Jindra.
Bobreneva spent 16 days inside what has been described as a “horrid” detention center before being released on a $35,000 bond. She was also ordered to wear an electronic monitor.
Bobreneva said: “I felt like a piece of meat, not like a human.”
A Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement to the NY Times: “Any claim that there are substandard conditions at the Adelanto ICE processing facility is FALSE.”
“All detainees are provided with proper meals, water, medical treatment, and have opportunities to communicate with their family members and lawyers,” the spokesperson continued.
In the viral moment that sparked this story, a MAGA loyalist who championed Trump’s immigration crackdown found himself watching his own wife handcuffed and taken into custody by the very agency he had supported. The incident occurred at a California airport in July, when Bobreneva was separated from Jindra and transported to detention in Los Angeles. The case gained traction as commentators noted the stark irony of a three-time Trump voter facing direct consequences from the administration’s aggressive deportation policies.
The Trump administration confirmed in January that it would freeze visa processing for people coming from 75 countries, which included Russia on the list. That policy shift has affected numerous individuals with pending immigration cases.
Bobreneva’s case remains active as she continues to navigate the immigration system while wearing an electronic monitoring device.
