Donald Trump is reportedly ‘considering’ a significant and daring step as he prepares for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week.
On August 8, the President of the United States announced that he would meet Putin in Alaska following the expiration of his ultimatum for the Kremlin to establish peace with Ukraine.
Nearly two weeks prior, Trump indicated plans to implement further sanctions on Russia and introduce secondary tariffs aimed at countries purchasing Russian oil if the Kremlin did not progress towards a resolution in Ukraine.
Despite this, the Republican president is optimistic about a potential breakthrough as he plans to meet Putin on August 15 to discuss ending the conflict.
“The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska,” Trump shared on Truth Social.
“Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
A report by NBC News suggests Trump is ‘considering’ inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Alaska for the talks.
“It’s being discussed,” a source described as ‘familiar with the situation’ informed the outlet.
While a decision has not been finalized, a senior official within the Trump administration mentioned it’s ‘absolutely’ possible Zelenskyy could be present in Alaska next week.
“Everyone is very hopeful that would happen,” the official stated.
When questioned about an official invitation to Zelenskyy, a White House representative stated: “The President remains open to a trilateral summit with both leaders. Right now, the White House is focusing on planning the bilateral meeting requested by President Putin.”
Trump has previously proposed a peace agreement might include ‘swapping of territories,’ a notion that Kyiv continues to oppose.
In a Telegram post on August 9, Zelenskyy refuted claims that Ukraine would relinquish any of its land.
“The answer to Ukraine’s territorial question is already in the constitution of Ukraine,” the Ukrainian president declared. “No one will and no one can deviate from it. Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier.”
“Any solutions that are without Ukraine, are at the same time, solutions against peace. They will not bring anything. These are dead solutions, they will never work.”
According to CBS News, the White House is attempting to persuade European leaders to accept a proposal where Ukraine would cede territory in Donbas, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia to Russia.
