Donald Trump’s recent announcement has sparked concern and apprehension, as many are worried about the potential implications and the broader effects of this decision.
Known for his frequent use of Truth Social, Trump often addresses various topics, from disputes with Russian leaders to discussions about the Epstein files.
A significant part of his administration’s focus has been on immigration, leading to notable backlash against ICE’s efforts to deport individuals.
Amidst occasional roof strolls at the White House, the President has been actively sharing his latest plans online.
Recently, he posted an update that could significantly affect thousands in the U.S., prompting one critic to label the move as ‘sickening’ due to the anticipated consequences.
In his post, Trump stated: “I have instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern day facts and figures and, importantly, using the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024.”
He further added: “People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The U.S. census, a constitutional requirement, has been conducted every ten years since 1970.
Many view it as a crucial tool for understanding the economy.
The Census Bureau is tasked with counting every resident in the U.S., regardless of citizenship status.
This process involves distributing surveys and employing enumerators (those who gather census data) to collect information door-to-door.
The census data is vital for determining the number of seats each state receives in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Additionally, it plays a significant role in determining state funding and is used for infrastructure planning and other purposes.
The most recent census, conducted in 2020, estimated the U.S. population at 331,449,281, without specifying the number of individuals living illegally in the country.
Data from the Pew Research Center indicated that in 2022, there were an estimated 11 million undocumented people in the U.S., a decrease from a peak of 12.2 million in 2007.
In response to Trump’s post, one person commented: “I extensively use census data in my job. I figured it was only a matter of time before he came for it. This is infuriating and sickening.”
Another remarked, “Someone tell mister efficiency a census costs ten billion dollars.”
One user insisted, “I’m not opening my door to a census worker.”
A Reddit user reassured, “The logistics on this take years and even then has to go through Congress for approval. They are just going to fudge the numbers then send it off to Congress where even Republicans won’t touch this. Release the Epstein files my dude it’s just easier at this point.”
However, not all reactions were negative. A commenter on X (formerly Twitter) stated: “A new census count for now going forward with ONLY US citizens is essential. Glad they are moving forward with it,” while another added, “Protecting elections means counting only citizens. This bill strengthens fairness and voter integrity.”
